Trying to figure out what to where for fall family photos can be really hard when there are so many options and with fall only lasting for a few weeks then you have the added stress of a small time frame to plan and book your family session!
Hey, my name is Kathryn and I am a family photographer in Logan, Utah. The number one question I get asked during the fall months is "What should I wear for family family photos?" Now, of course everyone has the main color picked out but what most family's struggle is finding matching complementary colors that aren't all ready overly used.
Choosing Your Fall Family Color's Using Color Theory:
I know what you are thinking right now. "color theory? Why do I need to know this?". Good news is you do not need to know this I am just giving you some very brief information about color theory that will make picking a color pallet for your fall family photos easier. There are a few different ways you can pick colors to make great color pallets for outfit coordination. These are:
Complementary Harmony
Analogist Harmony
Monochromatic Harmony
Triatic Harmony
Keep in mind these are just a few color theories you can use but they are also the most used for planning outfits for family photos.
Complementary Harmony
This is the one that most of us know from elementary art classes, complementary colors are two colors that are opposite of one another on the color wheel. Below is a photo of a color wheel with dots on the complementary colors orange and blue, these are two colors that a lot of family's use for their color pallets along with cream and a shade of brown. Now of course you can pick different shades of the colors orange and blue that you see below but you would still stay with its matching complementary shade across the wheel.

Analogous Harmony
The one is not used as often but still great for finding the color range you want to stick with. Analogous color pallets are made using the colors that are NEXT to one another on the color wheel NOT different shades of ONE color. You can use different shades of different colors next to each other as well and pair denim or tan jeans with these colors. Below is an example of a fall color range using this method.

Monochromatic Harmony
The color theory idea is similar to the last one but you are using ONE color in different shades. For example the number one fall color for family photos is orange so you would use that color and go lighter and darker with the shades and pair with tan/brown/dark colored jeans. Or if you are not a fan of dark jeans you can also do a cream colored shirt and one of the shades of orange for pants/shirts. Below is a hue showing different shades of orange compared to the classic orange we find on pumpkins.

I hope this helped you understand a little more about color theory for your fall family photos. If you are looking for a family photographer to help you capture some awesome fall photos checkout the CONTACT option in the menu to get in touch with me!
