The Watkins Fall Family Session | Logan Canyon

Updated: Mar 22, 2024

Fall is one of my favorite times for family photos, but it does not last long here in Cache Valley. So once you start to feel a slit chill in the air in the early mornings or late evens- it's time to start planning your session.

This year it seems we actually had a nice 3-4 weeks of fall, which means more time for the famous fall minis! This family was a part of my second fall mini's date on October 7th down at Second Dam in Logan Canyon. Funny enough this was their first time going here! Most people know where First Dam is, located at the entrance of Logan Canyon, it's pretty easy to spot. However- Second Dam is actually kind of hard to see so if you are out on a Sunday drive you won't get a glimpse at this location unless you know where to look. So it's no wonder why some life long residents of the Cache Valley area are unfamiliar as to the physical location of Second Dam. (Good thing Google know exactly where to take you to find it!) Being that this was the Watkins family's first time at Second Dam I took them on a little walk around the picnic area, boardwalk, and the hiking trail to really get a nice variation of what Logan Canyon has to offer.

Depending on how much reds, oranges, and yellows you want for your photos will dictate where in Second Dam we will spend most of our time during your family mini session.

If you want to see some of the yellow/orange leaves then Second Dam Picnic area is your go to! You will be able to get some fun photo's on the infamous Second Dam bridge, which you can take over to the hiking trail to get more of a golden look to your fall mini's.

If you love the "Wooden Boardwalk on a Lake" look to your fall family photo's then you are in luck! There is a beautiful view of the fall foliage when you go out on to the board walk further down from the picnic area. If you keep walking down this path, you will find a set of wooden stairs that hit the sunlight perfectly in the afternoon! Kind of looks like the stairway to Haven!

Finally, for my families who just love the mountains and the bright red/orange colors this spot is PERFECT for you! To find this area in Second Dam you need to type in to google "Second Dam Picnic Area". I say this for two reasons, 1 this will bring you to the parking area OFF of the main highway which is great if you have little ones who like to run. And 2, it will bring you past a flat area above the Hydro Power Plant where you can get a great shot of the Mountain. I also noticed this is the area you are more likely to find the bright red/orange leaves.
